Help understanding Wax?

I'm interested because of the Topps action (releasing cards on blockchain) but having a hard time figuring out how Wax works. I am partially crypto literate but don't understand some simple stuff like how staking works with wax. Does anybody here trinc the project?

Any other thoughts on where I can go or who I can ask? I found the white paper but it's just out of my range of understanding. Their subreddit appears dead.

One example question I have is how are the transactions free?
