The Australian government needs to pay closer attention to the meteoric rise of bitcoin and its regulation in the local market, as businesses and customers in*creasingly turn to the world’s most famous digital currency for transactions.
That is the view of Ronald Tucker, chairman delegate of the Australian Digital Currency Commerce Association, who argues that Australia has the chance to be the leader in tightening the regulatory framework around bitcoins in the Asia-Pacific region – or be left behind as other economies take note.
Mr Tucker met with government representatives on Wednesday, including some from the Australian Taxation Office, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, Treasury and the Reserve Bank of Australia, calling for more official bitcoin monitoring.
He argues that self-regulation – in tandem with government input – would go a long way to legitimising the currency, cutting down on crime and protecting consumers.
“Digital currency is here to stay,” he said. “There’s certainly a need for an agile response, and if we don’t respond appropriately now and quickly to get off on the right foot, there’s a possibility that Australia gets left behind.
“We believe the key here is working with government and working on self-regulation.”
‘WE ARE ASKING FOR GUIDANCE AND REGULATION’
The world’s fascination with bitcoins has seen investors such as Richard Bran*son explore ways to play in the sector. Investors have pumped over $US300 million ($319 million) into bitcoin ventures in the past 18 months, with $200 million dished out in 2014 alone. Nearly $11 million has already been invested in Australia. Earlier this year, micro-cap resources investment group Macro Energy turned from funding dirt diggers to mining its own digital currency, after it became the back door for a listing of bitcoin group Digital CC Holdings in March.
In May, the ATO consulted with key figures in the growing bitcoin industry for the first time, as it prepared guidelines for how to recognise and tax it and other virtual currencies.
Bitcoin has attracted its fair share of negative attention. Mt.Gox, once the largest online exchange for the currency, filed for bankruptcy earlier this year after a major hacking incident.
Mr Tucker said the fall of Mt.Gox was “something we need to take our *lessons from”, but argued that its failure had nothing to do with the fundamental protocol of the technology behind bitcoin. “It’s to do with poor management,” he said. “Regulation needs to target incivil using digital currency, not just the technology itself. We are asking for guidance and regulation; we want to comply.”
Some of the recent regulatory developments around bitcoin overseas include the state of California changing its laws to declare bitcoin “legal money”, and the United Kingdom’s Revenue Commission considering the supply of bitcoin to be value added tax-exempt. The European Banking Authority has cautioned banks against dealing in bitcoins themselves until the currency is regulated, but allows them to continue relationships with bitcoin businesses.

If you’re looking for something of value behind Bitcoin, I’d argue that it’s the private keys. Certainly, every fraction of a bitcoin is backed by one. And once bitcoins are sent to an address, the corresponding private key becomes extremely valuable.
