Los niños que son VIH negativos no padecen SIDA, aunque sus madres sean consumidoras habituales de drojas ilegales (European Collaborative Study, 1991; Abrams y col., 1995). En cambio de los 64 niños seropositivos estudiados, el 30% desarrolló SIDA entre los 6 meses y un año de edad, y en el primer año habían fallecido el 17% (European Collaborative Study, 1991). En otro estudio realizado en Nueva York, con 84 niños VIH positivos y 248 niños VIH seronegativos todos ellos procedentes de madres heroinómanas (o de otro tipo de drojas inyectables), de los 84 niños infectados con VIH, 22 murieron en los 27.7 meses primeros de edad, de los que 20 no alcanzaron los 2 años. 21 de las 22 muertes se asociaron con enfermedades relacionadas con el SIDA. En el grupo de los 284 niños no infectados solamente se produjo un fallecimiento en los 22.6 primeros meses y fue debido a un caso de abuso infantil (Abrams et al., 1995).
