Ariad rounds out phase 3 cancer study
Ariad Pharmaceuticals announced late Thursday it has completed enrollment for its phase 3, 650-patient clinical trial for a drug therapy targeting soft-tissue and bone cancers.
The Cambridge, Mass.-based company said the effort to enroll the trial’s patient population took approximately two years and represents the largest known clinical drug trial to target soft-tissue and bone sarcomas, a particularly aggressive form of cancer with limited treatment options, the company said in a regulatory filing.
Ariad (Nasdaq: ARIA) said the randomized study of its oral drug candidate ridaforolimus will be given to patients who have reported positive results from past rounds of chemotherapy. The trial will take place at 145 locations in 25 countries. The company is developing and planning to potentially market the drug in collaboration with international drug giant Merck & Co.
Ariad said the trial has received a prioritized review status from both U.S. and European regulators, given the severity and prevalence of sarcomas.
