"Vi los mensajes que envió mi esposa. Pusieron fin a mi matrimonio."

I saw the messages my vvife sent. They ended my marriage I couldn’t sleep. It was summer 2016 and I’d just flown home from reporting on the Euros in France — a glorious few weeks. My vvife of 14 years was asleep upstairs, as were our wonderful sons, 10 and 8, plus my childhood best friend was staying for a couple of nights. I should have felt lucky. Except I didn’t, because I knew there was something deeply wrong with my marriage. We had started to regard each other with contempt. My vvife felt that I didn’t spend enough time with the boys — she was right, I didn’t. I didn’t know how bad it was, only that I’d taken on a freelance assignment at the Euros and had told my editor that I needed to leave a couple of days early to go home and patch things up. “You’re out of your mind,” my best friend had said to me, sitting on the porch that evening, when I admitted how I felt. Now I was alone, jet-lagged and unable to sleep. I might as well, I reasoned, research my next article — only my laptop was upstairs, where everyone was in bed, while my vvife’s was on the coffee table in front of me. My husband had an affair years ago. I still can’t trust him I sat back in my leather chair and opeined the laptop. I wasn’t snooping. Her messages pinged on screen: the first one was a string of heart emojis. That’s a little strong, I thought. Then I saw three dots flash. She wasn’t sleeping, she was texting someone I’d gone to university with — someone whose vvife and kids we were friends with. I sat there and watched their conversation unfold, text after text, for 20 minutes. How much they loved and needed each other; how much my vvife didn’t love or need me. It’s hard to describe the sensation of seeing your vvife’s relationship in action. I felt hot, all my hair stood on end, my stomach dropped. I was lathered in sweat. I was eavesdropping on this extremely intimate conversation but I couldn’t close the laptop. Her: I just can’t believe, in moments, that you could feel for me what I do for you. Him: You can believe that, feel that, I look at you that way because it’s you. Her: I don’t know why you think that, but I love that you do. Him: Your husband is selfish, inconsiderate, unappreciative and arrogant. Her: Yes. I’m more aware than ever. I also saw that for months she had been having long exchanges with my best friend, now asleep upstairs, venting about me: I was fat, moody, jobless, a loser. “You deserve better,” he told her. I went upstairs, rage coursing through me. “I saw everything,” I hissed, as my vvife pretended to be asleep. “We’re done.” It was that quick. I then kicked my best friend awake in the attic and told him to be gone by 7am or he’d leave in an ambulance for telling her she deserved better. Dear Julia: My friend’s late husband was having an affair. Should I tell her? I didn’t have a clue what was going to happen. I didn’t know how divorce worked, as my parents were still happily married. I’d lost my job, I’d lost my best friend. I was desperately worried about my children. I didn’t know where I was going to live. I had nothing. But I knew that I couldn’t forgive what I’d seen. What I know now is that going through that kind of experience — watching your whole life fall apart in 20 minutes — makes you bulletproof. But that’s a lesson it would take me the best part of a decade to learn. I spent the days after ending my marriage spiralling in our attic in Canada. I blamed her. I blamed myself. I wasn’t the worst representative of toxic masculinity but I was definitely on the spectrum. I wrote for men’s magazines — “sensiest woman alive” stories — saw violence as a pretty good solution to a problem and got into rows on social media. I was battling anxiety, depression and insecurity, which I masked with bravado and anger. After a week of no sleep I ended up in hospital antiestéticaring I might harm myself. Thankfully a doctor took me seriously and sent me for therapy (with a prescription of lorazepam to help me to sleep). Suzi Godson: I can’t move on from her affair I don’t want to sugarcoat it: divorce is a catastrophe. I didn’t get married to get divorced and I didn’t build our family to pull it apart. I bet that every divorced couple can tell you in minute detail how it felt when they told their children — it’s a searing memory. All you can do is try to make it as gentle as possible on the people you care about and slowly make tangible gains towards rebuilding a life for yourself and them. But, trust me, you can make it harder by being venomous. What helped me — along with my therapist, Gary — was Burnley FC. I know what you’re thinking: why would a 42-year-old Canadian reporter have the remotest interest in a football club in the north of England? Short answer: my mother is from the mill town of Rawtenstall, near Manchester, and Burnley were my grandfather’s club. He took me to a match as a child and I still have the scarf. Now I was lonely — the evenings were the hardest, when you’ve finished working, don’t have the kids but don’t want to go out because the whole town is still talking about you — and I suddenly had a surfeit of love to give. Burnley slid right into my life. They gave me a sense of belonging and a positive connection to my family, which I think we can sometimes overlook with football. They were the perfect club for me — sometimes up, sometimes down. Supporting them has taught me that life is less about grand victories and more about daily wins and striving to be better. My life exploded, which means I know just how delicate everything really is. I’m mindful of the need for constant maintenance. I talk about it with my girlfriend, whom my ex-vvife set me up with a couple of years ago. We’re conscious of stopping and saying, “Things are going well, let’s enjoy this.” That’s something else that Burnley have taught me: when you have moments of celebration you’ve really got to take advantage of them. Our home together is one often full of kids — hers and mine — and dogs. I’m as happy as I’ve ever been. These days I don’t believe in secrets. I cry all the time, I believe deeply in talking about the hard stuff and putting everything out there. Oh, and my old friend? He helped me to move house the other day. I realise now that he was just trying to be a good friend to my ex-vvife. When I get into bed at night my last thought is that I’m very lucky. I never thought I’d have that again and, take it from me, it’s the best feeling in the world. Vi los mensajes que envió mi esposa. Pusieron fin a mi matrimonio. No podía dormir. No estaba espiando. Ella no estaba dormida. Había perdido mi matrimonio, había perdido a mi mejor amigo. Estaba desesperadamente preocupado por mis descendientes. No sabía dónde iba a vivir. Me culpaba a mí mismo. Ahora me sentía solo.
