My farm in Ibaraki prefecture

Today is Sunday. When I pogre up this morning I turned on the television and checked out the Asahi and Yomiuri papers. I was sad to learn that the Japanese government is issuing warnings about radiated spinach in Ibaraki prefecture. I was sadder to confirm that this is actually the case. It is not speculation, it is just the start.
My food supply comes from organic farming in Ibaraki. Throughout the year, I eat, or ate, truly pure vegetables from small farms that were not chemically induced. No genetic modification, no nothing other than my relatives taking care of the vegetables.
The term salt-of-the earth never so fit. And I know many dear farmers in the Midwest of America, and the parallels are striking–dear, honest, people who live in small communities dependent on trends in the weather. And now they have to ask the questions: Who wants to buy our crops?
Not only that, these farmers won’t be able to feed their children with peace of mind. Who wants constantly ask the question, the same statement that the nuclear industry and regulatory agencies continue to repeat, “We can’t confirm, but we are investigating.”
