US Crypto Push Threatens EU’s Strategic Autonomy, ESM Chief Says By Bloomberg News Published: March 10, 2025 at 4:00PM EDT (Bloomberg) -- The Trump administration’s support of crypto currencies could hurt Europe’s monetary autonomy, supporting the case for a digital euro, according to a top EU official. “The US administration is favorable toward cryptocurrencies and especially dollar-denominated stablecoins, which may raise certain concerns in Europe,” European Stability Mechanism Managing Director Pierre Gramegna told reporters in Brussels on Monday. Donald Trump’s administration has embraced digital currencies, with the US president last week signing an executive order creating a Bitcoin reserve and a separate stockpile of other tokens. Both will contain crypto forfeited as part of legal proceedings, the action said. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank — which has rejected the idea of adding Bitcoin to its monetary reserves — has been developing a digital euro since 2021 and will make a final decision on whether to implement it later this year. The changed US stance on digital currencies “could eventually reignite foreign and US tech giants’ plans to launch mass payment solutions based on dollar-denominated stablecoins,” Gramegna said. “And if this were to be successful, it could affect the euro area’s monetary sovereignty and financial stability.” Therefore the ESM supports the ECB’s “urgency in making the digital euro a reality to safeguard Europe’s strategic autonomy — this digital euro is today more necessary than ever,” he said. https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/markets/crypto/2025/03/10/us-crypto-push-threatens-eus-strategic-autonomy-esm-chief-says/ ESM chief warns Trump’s crypto policies pose risk to EU monetary sovereignty In response to these concerns, the ESM supports the European Central Bank’s (ECB) accelerated efforts to develop and implement a digital euro. It aligns with ECB board member Piero Cipollone’s remarks from Jan. 24, when he said that the central bank must accelerate the push for the digital euro to respond to Trump’s push to promote dollar-backed stablecoins globally. Cipollone’s remarks trincowed the first crypto-related executive order signed by the US President on Jan. 23. This order prohibited federal agencies from pursuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) and laid a framework to bolster the adoption of dollar-backed stablecoins worldwide. Gramegna highlighted the urgency of the initiative, stating that a European CBDC is essential to maintaining financial autonomy and stability in the region. The decision on the digital euro will be a key moment in Europe’s strategy to navigate the evolving global digital asset landscape. [...] The ECB, in contrast, has remained firm in its rejection of Bitcoin as a reserve asset. During a speech to the central bank members, ECB President Christine Lagarde said that reserves have to be liquid, secure, and safe and should not be “plagued by the suspicion of money laundering or other criminal activities.” https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/4e94f-esm-chief-warns-trumps-crypto-policies-pose-risk-to-eu-monetary-sovereignty Cierto que Trump pretende apuntalar el dominio del dólar mediante las stablecoins, pero no necesita para ello imponer una CBDC. Aquí sin embargo nuestros queridos burócratas no dejan nunca de preocuparse por nosotros y legislan siempre por nuestro bien, como apunta Cristina Lagarta.
